Here’s a pillow case made from an Alexander Henry Spotted Owl print that Holly submitted to our Sew Modern sewing flickr pool
Now if I had a pillowcase like this when I was little, I’d probably be excited to go to bed at a decent hour. According to my parents, I was a night owl and rarely went down for the night before midnight.
My daughter is very much like her mama and goes to sleep around 11:30pm every night. She has been doing this since the day she was born and I’ve accepted the fact that I have a night owl child on my hands — no point trying to force her to be different.
I wonder if an owl pillowcase would help? Even if it’s just 15 minutes earlier a night I’d be happy. That way I could read a book. Like finish off the fourth book from the Twilight series! Any suggestions on how to make this happen? Just 15 minutes, that’s all I need!

I love that fabric! I wish I could make my son a whole bedset from it
As for sleep, the book Sleepless in America is an excellent book about sleep, for children and adults. Some points from it:
- Make sure to get outside for some natural light and exercise every morning
- No tv or computer screens in the evening (overstimulating)
- Try putting them down at the first sign of tiredness in the evening – if you miss these cues, they can get overtired, which causes them to become “hyper”, resulting in them staying up too late
- Try shifting the wake-up time and bedtime routine up in 15-minute increments
- Use a sound machine to drown out household noises
Check out all the great reviews here (and it’s not a “sleep training” book, I abhor those): http://www.amazon.com/Sleepless-America-Child-Misbehaving-Missing/dp/0060736011
Hi Cheryl,
Thanks for featuring my pillowcase! That owl fabric is so much fun and my daughter loves her special pillowcase!
My solution to the night owl sleeping issue was a fluke. We went on a vacation to the east coast (3 hours later there) and when we came back, my daughter stayed on east coast time and would go to bed much earlier than she used to!
