It has been 2 years since I last took a yoga class. Yup, 2 years. I started hot yoga (yoga in a 40C room for 1 hour) a few weeks before I got pregnant. As soon as I saw the + sign on the pregnancy test, I had to stop. Obviously being in temperatures like that (especially when you are Canadian and not used to anything above 25C … HAHA) isn’t good for a soon to be mom or her baby.
But now, I AM BACK!! Back with a vengence.
Ok I lied.
I actually couldn’t hold many of the poses for more than 10 seconds. I’m an expert at the breathing though. Inhale, exhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaallle. 2 years away from any exercise routine isn’t good but I’m determined to get back into shape this year.
I hope to make it through a 60 minute class without losing balance or giving up and sitting on my mat for half of it by this June. I think 6 months is a good timeframe to work with — I’m going to go at least once a week.
So what about you? “Experts” say 97% of all New Year’s resolutions are broken in the first week of January. Seeing as this week is almost up, I think I’ve done pretty good. Although I did have french fries before going to class so the healthy eating bit isn’t going to well. I would like to say they were sweet potato fries (so it’s healthier) but no, it was the regular potato kind. Ah, 1 out of 2 resolutions isn’t bad
Oooo…. and if you’ve never tried yoga before I’d highly recommend it. It’s very relaxing. But maybe not at 40C (104F) if you’re trying yoga out for the first time.

Congrats, Cheryl! I just got back to doing yoga (rather, Body Flow at Goodlife) and I was a disaster as well. and I don’t even have the excuse of pregnancy! My entire body was sore the next day. In contrast to your “hot yoga” goal for 2010, I signed up for an 8km run on Jan 24th in Burlington. by the lake. I’m crazy. but hopefully I can finish the race within an hour! that’s my goal.
I too have decided yoga is my New Year resolution, but mine is coming via mail in the form of Wii fit! I am THE most awkward and clumsy person and so the other day when my daughter asked me to do a cartwheel and I just about gave myself a concussion – I realized it was time to get some flexibility and grace.
Kelly, I used to love Body Flow at Goodlife! Unfortunately I don’t have a membership anymore (difficult to go regularly so I pay as I go at a yoga studio). I know what you mean about being sore. Just sitting at the desk and typing on a keyboard was painful! Wow, congrats to you for signing up for an 8km run! That’s pretty amazing. I have never run more than 1km LOL so 8 is like a marathon to me
Melissa, awesome! I have the Wii fit as well but I find it really hard to stay motivated when I’m doing it by myself. HA! At least you tried to do a cartwheel – I’ve never been able to do one properly — legs always tend to bend. Here’s to both of us being more graceful this year!
